It was late September, and the first generous swell of the season had arrived to the islands. On this particular evening, I wanted to escape the crowds that lined the shore. I wanted to find peace, to welcome this new energy in solitude. I ventured opposite of the golden sand, weaving through tall grass towards a higher elevation. Here the atmosphere was thick with humidity. Gentle tradewinds carried a pure nostalgic scent of Hawaiian flora and salty air. An audible trance of continuous static came from crashing surf off in the distance. Atop the hillside, I gazed out to infinite lines of rolling swell. The light was fading, the sun beyond the horizon, the blue of the Pacific was radiating, perfectly undisturbed. I basked in this moment, hypnotized as massive waves traversed through outer reefs in slow motion. I had reached the Spire.
