Whiteout

Below-freezing temperatures and snow showers followed us all morning through this winding canyon. The line of cattle stretched on for nearly a mile behind me as cowboys weaved back and forth to keep them on the trail and not venturing into deep snow and sagebrush. The clouds hung low and would blow in every few minutes completely obscuring our view and filling the valley in a complete whiteout. I have experienced cold weather but not this kind of cold. Our mustaches and beards had ice sickles hanging from them. With every breath of air the more they would freeze. The horses’ manes were completely frozen. Our faces numb from the stinging temperature that read -27 degrees. One cowboy got frostbite in his left ear from our time out in these brutal elements. Regardless of how painful it is mentally and physically to photograph in these temperatures, it sure is rewarding when I’m able create images like this one here.
