Under A Western Sky

Cracks of thunder echoed across the horizon. The last bit of light dances along the Anvil of a distant monsoon as the valley turns blue. The smell of wet grass and mesquite fills the air. Dirt beneath our boots is changing every day as spring crawls up through the cracks of soil along this weathered basin. Daylight carries on longer into the evenings and greets us earlier each morning. The cowboy knows this pattern like the lines in his hands. Landscapes as far as the eye can see yet where very few have graced its surface. Silence makes its home here and only shares it with those who welcome it. Life out here sets its own pace and begins or ends when it decides. The faces who bless it often come and go like the wind, leaving behind their spirits as guardians of the land. Memories that carry us forward as beacons, preserving their legacy in a time where most ignore their existence. Many find interest in the simplicity and romance of the western lifestyle but only those who make a life of it will truly know its ways. Anything but unshakeable dedication will soon vanish like wildflowers in a drought yet the cowboy’s heart will live on like the rain, bringing forth new life as a new day emerges.
